LEG BAND
A leg-band transmitter is attached to the bird's leg above the knee with the antenna pointing toward the ground. The transmitter is attached with epoxy to a plastic or metal leg band. The leg band is most often supplied by the user. The band may be full width or cut down to half width. It is possible to attach leg-band transmitters to leg bands already on the birds. Leg-band attachments do not encumber the wings, body, or neck and should reduce potential effects on behavior. Leg-band attachments may reduce potential aerodynamic drag during long distance migrations. They are used on long-legged birds such as cranes and storks. Field range is comparable to other attachment methods with external whip antennas.
NECK BAND
A neck-band transmitter is attached to a plastic collar most often supplied by the researcher. The three different methods normally used to attach the antennas are a short whip antenna pointing towards the ground in front of the bird's heart, a short whip antenna pointing posterior over the bird's back, and an antenna embedded into the plastic of the collar in a zigzag pattern.
A neck-band transmitter, with the antenna embedded in the collar, has one third to one half the field range of a backpack design. However, a neck-band transmitter with reduced field range and life is preferred over a backpack transmitter when tracking geese and swans that are notorious for breaking antennas and removing backpack harnesses within days.
The transmitter series' below may all be ordered in either neck band or leg band configurations.
