To mitigate the reduced range of implants using a coil antenna, some researchers use a body implant transmitter placed in the body cavity with a whip antenna protruding vertically from the bird's back. This design is used where an external harness is not acceptable and is most often used on diving ducks (canvas backs, redhead, scamp, etc).The site where the antenna protrudes from the bird's back presents a risk of infection and is also not as aerodynamic or hydrodynamic as the body implant transmitter with internal coil antenna. This design is not commonly used, requires a high surgical skill, and a longer recuperation period.
